Two Separate Funding Initiatives for Smarter Travel currently underway.
There are two funding initiatives currently underway to support the delivery of sustainable transport projects nationwide.
Firstly, there is a Smarter Travel Areas Competition. This competition is aimed at supporting a comprehensive demonstration of how sustainable transport principles can be successfully applied to an area (either rural or urban), such that it can become an example of best practice in integrated and sustainable transport. The total value of the fund is €50 million over five years, and the fund will likely result in support for a small number of areas which demonstrate the capability to deliver real and lasting changes towards more sustainable transport choices by its residents and business. Secondly, there is the Smarter Travel Project Fund. This is a fund of around €15 million in total that will run over 5 years, meaning an annual total of around €3 million is available to support projects. This fund is aimed at support smaller demonstration projects that can deliver real and measurable change in how people travel. The fund will support projects of up to three years in length. The fund will aim to support small sustainable transport projects that can deliver real and measurable changes at a local level, or for example, overcome specific local barriers to more sustainable choices. The deadline for applications was September 9th 2009. Successful applications from an area for these small demonstration projects will not affect more comprehensive bids for the Smarter Travel Areas competition. Application to the Smarter Travel Project Fund is now closed and successful applicants will be notified in due course.
